In Vehicle Information SystemThis research and development project ran from August 1995 to January 1998. A number of our partners were involved in this study at the technical and study design/management levels. The project used state of the art in-vehicle devices and wireless communications to provide continuous up-to-the-minute traveler information on incidents, road construction, weather and levels of congestion.
The information was sent from the data collection point to a service provider who broadcasted it using extra bandwidth on existing FM radio stations. Over 200 devices received information over the Radio Broadcast Data System - Traffic Message Channel (RBDS-TMC) using the network provided by Differential Corrections Incorporated (DCI) A high speed FM subcarrier system, supplied by SEIKO Communications Systems provided up to the minute information on traffic congestion, traffic incidents, weather reports and paging to 125 in-vehicle devices. |
